Tell us about your books! What do you love to write about?

I love to write about characters that most people would love to be friends with in real life. Characters with flaws and issues that are relatable. Most of my characters are drawn from people I’ve known at some point in my life. Like Ashanti, in Murder in the Maternity Ward and Murder in the Houston High Rise. Readers have said they’re not sure she’d talk like she does. But Ashanti is based on two people I knew when I lived in Oklahoma and her vocabulary is totally on point with how they talked!

I enjoy writing stories with a little humor, a little romance and a little mystery. I love writing twists and turns and making the reader wonder what’s going on. But mostly, I love to write stories that inspire, amuse, and entertain. In today’s world, we all need a safe place to escape to sometimes. And I try to create worlds that feel real, but also safe and happy.

What inspired you to get started as an author?

I’ve always loved to read and started writing my own stories as a small child. I won awards in junior high and high school for my creative writing and I considered becoming a journalist. But then life took me in a different direction. After several ER visits and emergency surgeries, I decided it was time I got back to doing what I love, and I started writing again. These past couple of years have been so bizarre that I haven’t written as much as I’d like to, but that’s all about to change. I have at least two new series I’m working on as well as more stories in the Danger and Donahues and Barnyard Fables series. I also plan to write a Season 2 for my Enchantingly Yours series, but I’m not sure which direction I want to go with that yet!

What are your favorite books to read?

That changes all the time! I have a few favorite authors that write in more than one genre and I read everything they write. I enjoy cozy mysteries, paranormal cozies, small town romances, some westerns, sci-fi and fantasy. But sometimes I’m in the mood for police procedurals, horror, or thrillers. I love everything by Jodi Taylor, Celina Grace, Sam Cheever and the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson.

For shoppers shopping for their loved ones, tell us who are your book(s) for?

My cozy mysteries and paranormal mysteries are for readers of any age who enjoy a light-hearted mystery with a cast of characters who feel familiar. My books also have a little romance and little silliness, but no graphic violence, sex or language. Enchantingly Yours: Season 1 has paranormal elements, but it’s more along the lines of Bewitched or Sabrina the Teenage Witch, so very light on the paranormal stuff. My children’s series is appropriate for early readers up to adults and for younger children if read to them. All of my books are feel good books with happy endings.

What’s the message you want to get out to people this Summer?

If life is getting you down or you’re feeling bored or lonely, pick up one of my books. They’ll take you away for a bit and leave you feeling satisfied and happy. Real life can be very stressful, and I take pride in writing books that make you smile, sigh and laugh out loud. And my children’s series teaches about things we all deal with in life, but also teaches ways to cope with them, in a way that’s fun and entertaining. Life is too short to be serious all the time. Take a moment to relax and enjoy a fun story, see if you can solve the mystery, and get lost in a world where people care about and support each other!
